Waste Audit of CIT completed

top

A waste survey has been carried out on campus.

This survey weighed and sampled waste from CIT’s Bishopstown campus for a day.  Special consideration was given to the waste segragation systems on campus and these are now under review.

Recommendations from this survey will help improve waste management, behaviors and facilities at CIT.

A full day waste survey was carried out at CIT during the month of October 2009. The entire days waste was weighed and sampled at random. In total 1.2 tonnes of waste was weighed and 125 kg was sampled.

We found that segregated materials (clear bags) were contaminated with 5% organics (food etc.) and 19% liquids. This means that segregated waste at CIT is often classified as landfill waste which has a higher disposal cost per tonne.
